Mark Luhovy, MD is a medical doctor and biomedical engineer who has dedicated 20 years to the pursuit of understanding the intersection of medicine and technology.
-
Dr. Luhovy completed medical school in Australia and the USA, undertaking preclinical training in Brisbane (AU) and providing care to underserved populations in New Orleans and rural Baton Rouge (USA). He became the first medical student to rotate through Innovation Ochsner, a healthcare system-based think tank and innovation lab. He contributed to growth at the Ochsner Medical 3D Lab, whose efforts are aimed at promoting virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and additive manufacturing (3D printing) practices within the health system. During medical school, Dr. Luhovy conducted oncology research focused on pancreatic cancer at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. He also founded and established BioEnginuity, a strategic digital healthcare and biotech consulting company, which he still owns and operates. BioEnginuity collaborates with private and public companies (early-stage to multinational), as well as academic and government institutions, with active international projects across multiple domains in healthcare.

After medical school, Dr. Luhovy served as a consultant to Johnson & Johnson on an EU-MDR regulatory, program management and digital transformation effort. In this role, he designed and directed cross-functional activities for a project staff of 30+ personnel, contributing to efforts aimed at digitally harmonizing the data landscape of J&J's entire medical device product portfolio. The machine learning (ML) application his team built and validated is still in use, accessing data across roughly 20 operating companies within J&J Medtech. During this time, he concurrently served as the Chief Operating Officer of PhenoMx, a digital health startup applying MRI-based radiomics and quantitative imaging models to health and wellness. More recently, he was one of two consultants responsible for contributing to the EU-MDR remediation of Iridex Corporation, with emphasis on the quality management system and post-market surveillance landscape of ophthalmology and ENT portfolios. In addition, he has actively contributed to the FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) application of a novel COVID-19 nasal and saliva diagnostic test for clients outside of the USA.
-
Dr. Luhovy currently acts as Digital Health Manager of the Stryker Australia R&D Lab - a point-of-care, open innovation ecosystem involving industry, academic, health system and government research partners. He also acts as the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Plasbotics, a medical-device startup commercializing the world's first patented, vacuum-assisted soft tissue retractor for robotic-assisted surgery.
-
Prior to medical school, Dr. Luhovy held positions of increasing responsibility across a 10-year career in the medical device industry, with stops at St. Jude Medical, Johnson & Johnson DePuy-Synthes and Draeger Medical. While employed full-time as an industry engineer, he completed post-baccalaureate premedical studies at Harvard University Extension School and became a certified PMP Project Management Professional, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Six Sigma Green Belt. He started his career conducting cardiovascular research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Dr. Luhovy holds a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MD from the University of Queensland. He is a former or active member of multiple professional societies including Life Sciences Queensland, Society of Physician Entrepreneurs (SoPE) [Chapter Leader - Brisbane, Australia], Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA), Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS), and Project Management Institute (PMI). In his free time, Mark enjoys travel, playing guitar, Brazilian jiu jitsu and spending time with his family.
